The Quay

Street guide, Hamble

The Quay is the waterfront area at the southern end of the High Street, where the village meets the River Hamble. It is the focal point of the village's relationship with the water. Small boats are moored along the quay, dinghies are hauled up on the hard, and the Hamble River Sailing Club operates from its premises nearby. The Quay has been the centre of Hamble's waterborne activity for centuries, used by fishermen, boatbuilders, and ferry operators long before the modern marinas were built. Today it has a more recreational character, but working boats still use the hard and the landing stage. The views from The Quay look south down the river towards its mouth at Southampton Water, with yachts at anchor and the wooded banks of the river on both sides. It is the most photographed spot in the village.
