Hamble Lifeboat Station Established
1968
The RNLI lifeboat station at Hamble was established to provide inshore rescue cover for Southampton Water and the eastern Solent. The busy shipping lanes of Southampton Water, combined with the large number of recreational sailors and motor boaters using the Hamble and the surrounding waters, create a steady demand for rescue services. The lifeboat station operates an Atlantic-class inshore lifeboat, crewed by trained volunteers from the local community. The station responds to a wide range of incidents, from yacht groundings and engine failures to medical emergencies on vessels and persons in difficulty in the water. The crew members are on call around the clock, ready to launch the lifeboat within minutes of a call from the Coastguard. The station has built up a strong record of service over the decades, and the volunteers who crew the lifeboat are drawn from the village and surrounding area. Many have professional maritime backgrounds, while others come from all walks of life but share a commitment to saving lives at sea. The lifeboat station is supported by local fundraising, and the RNLI shop and collection activities are a familiar part of village life. The station's presence at Hamble Point reinforces the village's maritime character and its connection to the sea.
