Hamble-Warsash Ferry

The passenger ferry crossing the River Hamble

The Hamble-Warsash ferry is a small passenger boat that crosses the River Hamble between the village quay at Hamble and the landing stage at Warsash on the opposite bank. The crossing takes only a few minutes and operates throughout the year during daylight hours, with a more frequent service in summer when demand is higher.

The ferry is pedestrian only. It does not carry vehicles, bicycles (though some operators will take folding bikes), or heavy loads. It operates on a hail-and-ride basis: if the boat is on the far side, you signal from the landing stage and the ferryman will come across to collect you.

The ferry has a long history. River crossings at this point have operated for centuries, serving the communities on both banks of the Hamble. The current service is run by a private operator and charges a small fare for the crossing. The fare is modest and represents good value for the convenience of the crossing.

The ferry is particularly useful for walkers doing the Solent Way long-distance footpath, which crosses the Hamble at this point. Without the ferry, walkers would face a long detour via Bursledon Bridge and the A27 to continue their route. The ferry also provides a pleasant way to access Warsash for shopping, eating, or walking without using a car.

The service can be suspended in bad weather, particularly during strong winds or very low tides. It is worth checking availability during winter months or in poor conditions. Despite these occasional interruptions, the ferry is a valued part of the local transport network and a charming feature of the village that connects Hamble to its neighbour across the water.
