Coastal Walks from Hamble

Walking routes along Southampton Water and the River Hamble

Hamble's position on the peninsula between the River Hamble and Southampton Water provides excellent coastal walking. The combination of foreshore paths, common land, and the Solent Way long-distance footpath means that walkers can enjoy a variety of routes without needing to drive anywhere.

The most popular walk is the circuit of the southern peninsula, starting from the village centre, crossing Hamble Common to the Southampton Water foreshore, following the coast south to Hamble Point, and returning via the marina road. This loop is approximately three miles and takes about an hour at a steady pace, with views across Southampton Water and the opportunity to watch passing ships.

The Solent Way long-distance footpath passes through Hamble, running along the coast and crossing the River Hamble by the ferry to Warsash. From Hamble, the Solent Way heads north along the foreshore towards Netley and the Royal Victoria Country Park, a walk of approximately two miles that passes through pleasant coastal scenery. Heading south and east, the path crosses to Warsash and continues along the coast towards Hill Head and the wider Solent shore.

Along the River Hamble, footpaths follow the eastern bank upstream from the village towards Bursledon. This riverside walk passes the marinas and boatyards and gives views of the boats moored on the river. The path eventually reaches Bursledon, where the railway bridge and the road bridge cross the river. This walk is approximately two miles each way.

The terrain is generally flat and the paths are mostly well-maintained, though some sections can be muddy after rain, particularly on the common and along the foreshore. Waterproof boots are advisable in winter. Dogs are welcome on most routes but should be kept under control near livestock and wildlife, particularly during the bird nesting season.

The coastal walks from Hamble are one of the village's strongest assets. The combination of open water views, maritime activity, and accessible paths makes walking here a genuine pleasure in any season.
