The Sailing Village on the River

Mercury Marina Area

River-facing marina on the site of the former Mercury training ship establishment, with boatyards, yacht services, and sailing club facilities.

The Mercury Marina area sits on the eastern side of the Hamble peninsula, along the River Hamble itself. Mercury Yacht Harbour (formerly the site of the Mercury training ship establishment) is a major marina providing berths, boatyard services, and pontoon access to the river. The marina takes its name from TS Mercury, a shore-based nautical training school that operated on this site from 1892 until 1968, preparing boys for careers in the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy. The training ship heritage is commemorated locally, though little physical evidence of the original establishment remains above the modern marina infrastructure. The area around the marina includes marine businesses, yacht brokers, and sailing-related services. The Royal Air Force Yacht Club is located nearby, one of several sailing clubs that use the River Hamble. The river frontage here provides views across to Warsash on the opposite bank, and the river is typically busy with sailing dinghies, keelboats, and motor launches. The character is working waterfront rather than leisure resort. Boats are hauled, scraped, painted, and launched. The boatyard operates throughout the year, with the spring refit season being particularly busy. Access to the Mercury area is from Satchell Lane, which runs east from Hamble Lane. The area is quieter than Hamble Point Marina but is a significant part of the village's maritime economy.
